The Oracle Redwood transition represents a significant leap toward modernizing the user experience (UX) for enterprises worldwide. Initially introduced at Oracle OpenWorld 2019, Oracle Redwood focuses on enhancing the user experience through improved usability and aesthetics.

Oracle aims to migrate all Oracle Cloud Applications to Redwood UX by 2026, with the HCM module slated for migration in Q3 of 2025. As this timeline approaches, it’s crucial to not only understand the migration roadmap but also prioritize a strong testing strategy to ensure a smooth and seamless transition to the Redwood UI.

If you're an Oracle user preparing to migrate to Redwood UI, these questions are likely to be at the top of your mind.

  • Which Oracle modules are prioritized for the initial migration to the Redwood UI?
  • Do I need to switch the new UI incrementally, or does it require a complete migration?
  • Will Redwood UI affect my current customizations or extensions?
  • What is the roadmap for future updates?

This guide provides IT professionals, Oracle users, and business stakeholders with vital insights into Redwood's migration roadmap, key challenges, and how continuous testing can streamline the transition.

Understanding the Oracle Redwood Migration Timeline

Oracle's migration to the Redwood UI is carried out in phases to minimize disruption, gather feedback, and ensure proper user adoption. Redwood will be gradually implemented through the Quarterly Updates, with HCM, EPM, and Financials as the primary focus.

The migration timelines focus on three key Oracle Cloud modules:

Oracle Human Capital Management (HCM)

The Oracle HCM migration is one of the most advanced in the Redwood roadmap and is scheduled to be completed in the third quarter of 2025.

Key Deadlines for Oracle HCM:

  • 23D Release: Most employee and manager self-service (ESS/MSS) pages transitioned to Redwood.
  • 24A and 24B Releases:
    • Remaining ESS/MSS pages migrated to Redwood.
    • Learning self-service for managers and employees transitioned fully by 24B.
  • 24D Release:
    • Checklists replaced entirely by Journeys.
    • The Redwood Timecard feature become mandatory for all users.

Oracle Financials

Oracle Financials is on a slower trajectory toward Redwood. Initial migrations began with pieces of procurement and financial management modules.

Key Highlights:

  • 24C Onwards:
    • Procurement Management Pages moved to Redwood.
    • Redwood-led features like Predictive Cash Forecasting were implemented.
  • More modules, including project management, are expected to roll out in the near future, with updates spanning into 2025.

Enterprise Performance Management (EPM)

The transition timeline for Oracle EPM is more aggressive, with the July 24.07 patch, all non-Redwood themes were removed, and Oracle Cloud EPM environments were automatically updated to the Redwood Experience.

Key Milestones:

  • July 5, 2024 - Test environments received the update.
  • July 19, 2024 - Production environments are fully transitioned under Redwood.

Challenges in Oracle Redwood Migration

Transitioning to Redwood is an ambitious but complex undertaking that may present challenges, including:

1. Legacy System Integration

Integrating Redwood with legacy Oracle systems or third-party apps requires significant effort. Existing customizations may need to be redesigned, tested, or rebuilt to ensure compatibility. Without a thorough integration strategy, businesses risk disruptions and downtime.

2. User Training and Adoption

Shifting to a completely new interface requires user retraining. Employees and administrators must become familiar with the new workflows to keep productivity levels intact.

3. Security and Compliance

With sensitive data stored within Oracle applications, migrating to Redwood involves careful validation of security configurations and data mappings. Unaddressed gaps could expose organizations to risks.

Why Continuous Testing is Essential for Redwood UI?

The iterative nature of Oracle Redwood releases necessitates constant validation to ensure seamless upgrades. Continuous testing automates these processes, saving businesses time and resources while maintaining high-quality standards.

Benefits of Continuous Testing:

  • Accelerated Deployments: Quickly address bugs and bottlenecks, paving the way for faster releases.
  • Reduced Risk: Oracle applications span across multiple third-party apps and ERPs, continuous testing mitigates compatibility issues with existing systems or security configurations.
  • Minimize Risks: Automated testing scripts ensure existing business processes remain functional while undergoing UI transformations. Particular focus is needed to ensure security compliance amidst evolving data workflows.
  • Enable Faster Time-to-Market: Automated regression tests cut down on delays caused by manual testing, reducing the overall rollout timeline.
